It is often used as an intermediate in medicine, pesticides, and organic synthesis, and a solvent for cellulose acetate. It is used to produce dimethylamide, dimethyl formate, oxalic acid, diphosgene, carbon-one chemical intermediates, and non-toxic carbonylation reagents.
