Butyryl chloride is an intermediate for the herbicides sethoxydim, trimethoprim-butyl, and cypermethrin. It is an organic synthesis intermediate used to prepare butylbenzene and the drugs ethacic acid, chloranil, and the intermediate 2-ethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedione. It is used in medicine, pesticides, flame retardants, water purifiers, etc.
