The EMC Directive 2014/30/EU (prior: 2004/108/EC)

Equipment that generates electromagnetic (EMC) disturbance of a certain level or has the immunity to such disturbance must bear the CE marking EMC. For affixing the CE marking on EMC equipment the Low Voltage Directive and the RoHS Directive usually applies.

CE marking electronic equipment

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of equipment to function in its electromagnetic environment without electromagnetic disturbances to other equipment in that environment. It relates both to electronic equipment and to fixed intallations (examples, computer, production line).

By affixing the CE marking on electronic equipment the manufacturer or the importer ensure that the product comply with the safety requirements of the EMC 2014/30/EU. The electronic equipment bearing the CE marking can traded freely within the European Economic Area (EEA).

Equipment that fall outside the scope of the EMC Directive:

Radio equipment that fall into the scope of the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED Richtlijn);

Aeronautical products, parts and appliances covered by Regulation 216/2008;

Radio equipment used by radio amateurs, unless the equipment is made available on the market;

Equipment the inherent nature of the physical characteristics of which is:

incapable of generating or contributing to electromagnetic emissions which exceed a level allowing radio and telecommunication equipment and other equipment to operate as intended;

operates without unacceptable degradation in the presence of the electromagnetic disturbance normally consequent upon its intended use;

Custom built evaluation kits destined for professionals to be used solely at research and development facilities for such purposes.

Six steps for CE marking electronic equipment (EMC)

The EMC Directive 2014/30/EU contains the legal obligations for each type of economic operators (manufacturer, importer, distributor).

The following step-by-step plan has been drawn up for the manufacturer.

Product classification: defining whether the product falls into the scope of the EMC Directive.

Economic operator classification: defining the role of economic operator within the EMC Directive.

Conformity procedure can be divided into the following parts:

Perform EMC testing based on EMC standards;

Draw up the procedures to ensure the conformity of series production;

Provide identification element of the product and the economic operator;

Provide instructions (user manual) and safety information;
