The History of PTFE
PTFE is a fairly new material that was in fact discovered by accident. It was on April 6, 1938, at DuPont's Jackson laboratory in New Jersey that the discovery was made. A chemist named Dr. Roy Punkett was working with gases similar to Freon refrigerants, called tetrafluorethylene (TFE). He had created around 100 pounds of the TFE and stored the gas in small cylinders before freezing them. Later, when he opened the cylinders, it was to discover a waxy, white powder resin. He ran tests on the new substance and found that it was extremely slippery. From this, PTFE was born.

4 years later, PTFE began to be sold. It was primarily used for military applications in the beginning, but by the 1960s, PTFE was being used in a variety of products, such as electrical wire insulation, and its most popular use was as a nonstick coating in cooking pans. Today, PTFE continues to be used in many products across all industries.
